A good business plan for any process improvement is imperative for success. Whether it be deploying a new technology, strengthening your workforce, or obtaining a new certification, a well thought out and documented plan keeps the end goal on track and provides for measurable success.

USF Reddaway – Vancouver, BC, Canada & Calgary, Canada – C-PAT Certification

I managed and secured USF Reddaway’s C-PAT Certification in six months. This was a vital certification for a carrier’s expedited border crossing to/from Canada.

I managed the design process to enhance the FMS system to automatically dispatch EDI border security crossing data. This helped to expedite the PAPS and the risk analysis, and reduce border crossing delay time.

USF Reddaway – Canadian PARS System – CPC Center

The company’s previous border-crossing process into western Canada was labor intensive, plagued with errors, and filled with driver delays. Gateway terminals were lacking the technology, training, and business process to outperform the market. Here are the steps I took to upgrade their systems:

  • Renovated business processes for exporting and importing freight with Canada and improving transit time by 20%. Change was seamless to customers.
  • Redesigned data communication infrastructure for high-speed image transfer and implemented a new business process.
  • Negotiated agreement with 3rd Party Canadian Processing Center (CPC) for 24/7 coverage, and implemented a training program for the gateway personnel.
  • All of these changes reduced driver delays time and eliminated three full-time clerical positions. This saved $60,000 annually.

Created and streamlined an online Dock Management Worksheet that could share shift recap reports, provide group review and identify specific productivity improvement. This workplace tool standardized the process for supervisors;

  • Automated the productivity rate adjustments to hit goal.

USF Reddaway – Facility Layout and Yard Management Systems

We engineered dock and yard layouts, traffic flow, and office workflow for existing and new construction. This was created for their facilities in Salem, Tacoma, Salt Lake City, Denver, Fontana, and Downey, California.

  • We engineered dock layouts to reduce stem distances, improved freight flow, and established new production records.
  • The yard layout simplified equipment location and allowed drivers and hostlers to position and locate equipment by zones and slots to accelerate equipment retrieval. This translated to improved door turn time, and reduced dock work standby time.

YRC Seattle/Portland, OR – Process Engineer

Dock layout modeling to calculate and reduced freight flow stem distance by optimal trailer dock placement. This system standardized supervisor’s decision process of an optimized freight flow Management in a 24/7 distribution center.

USF Reddaway – Clackamas, OR – Workforce Planning Modeling

We worked to standardize the methodology to determine daily shift staff based on current and inbound freight flow.

  • Created performance standards based on 8-week historical day of the week trends and using current staffing levels, the labor adjustment would be calculated to achieve their production goal.
  • Changed cultural staffing practices to re-aligned into a dynamic planning versus a static terminal practice.

USF Reddaway – Clackamas, OR – Created Workforce Planning – Monthly/Weekly Bid Start Time Model

We implemented a data collection system that would track the workflow on a 24 hours basis and align it with the current staffing levels. The analysis created a clear profile of work available and the labor scheduled to process it. Our realignments improved the timely processing of freight and consistently completed the inbound delivery plan by its desired timeline. This was able to reduce overtime costs.

  • Created a data retrieval system to assemble historical horizontal timelines of workflow arrival times to establish statistical averages to create baseline staffing level and start times.
  • Improved on-time service and reduced dock worker overtime.
  • Increased driver productivity by reducing driver terminal time within the terminal and expanding the driver’s delivery window.

USF Reddaway Terminal Network – Top 16 Target Terminals P&D Dispatch Management.

We created a daily inbound planning system for destination terminals that improved visibility to plan equipment, driver staffing, prioritization delivery plan, and achieve a higher productivity level. This tool enabled the dock operations to complete the designed delivery plan by city dispatch planners that match their priorities and staffing requirements.

  • Created a master delivery plan for each day with engineer routes designed based on historical deliveries with optimized route boundaries. I worked to improve miles per stop (MPS), bills per trip (BPT), and bills per stop (BPS) which translated into improved productivity.
  • We were able to reduce the planning process from hours to minutes, and created user modification tools to provide site-based refinements.

USF Reddaway — Critical Cuts

Created a new system to identify shipment destinations from local city pickups and provide visibility to the outbound supervisor to set unloading priorities based on predetermined destination cut times and improve customer delivery expectations.

  • The system would summarize and drill down to trailer and pro numbers of shipments within the terminal by destination, pieces, weight.
  • This visibility allowed an outbound supervisor to manage identify priority shipments so they could plan the unloaded schedule to meet the destination cut-time and ensure on-time delivery to the destination terminal.
  • Implementation an OB pickup system resulting in reduced break-bulk transfers by 1%, or $150,000 annual savings by ensuring all shipment available shipment were loaded on a destination trailer to avoid the extra cost of a breakbulk.
